Letter of Credit Arrangement

Letter of Credit Arrangement: How to Get a Bank to Issue Your LC

Banks are the only letter of credit providers that issue LCs. When your bank declines or asks for full cash cover, the issue is usually the credit file, not the bank list. Financely, a borrower-retained UK arranger, prepares that file, issues a written Go/No-Go, and runs the process with fit issuing and confirming banks. Financely does not issue LCs.

Who actually provides a letter of credit

An LC is a bank undertaking. The issuing bank takes the primary obligation. An advising bank authenticates and forwards the instrument. A confirming bank adds its own undertaking when the beneficiary needs it. Applicants searching for "letter of credit providers" often want a name that will issue. The workable answer is a bank that can credit the applicant, paired with a file that desk can approve.

Education on process and instrument types sits on how to get a letter of credit, confirmed letter of credit, sight letter of credit and usance letter of credit. Research on banks that issue LCs sits on banks that issue LCs.

Why LC applications get declined or fully cash-collateralised

Common drivers: thin financials, unclear trade logic, country risk, a new bank relationship, or wording that fights the underlying contract. Full cash cover is often the bank's way of saying the unsecured credit case is not ready. Fixing the file can change that conversation. Jumping banks with the same thin pack usually does not.

Context on collateral asks sits on why banks require cash collateral for standby letters of credit and on standby letters of credit. Standby and commercial LCs share credit logic on the applicant side. The packaging still has to show why the bank can lean into the risk without full cash cover.

Wording problems are underwriting problems in disguise. If the draft LC and the contract disagree on shipment terms, documents or presentation windows, credit committees treat that as open risk.

What LC arrangement covers

Written Go/No-Go

Before any fixed written fee, Financely reviews the contract or purchase order, the LC amount and tenor, the beneficiary, and your financials. The Go/No-Go states whether a bankable path exists and what must be fixed first. That keeps applicants from paying for packaging that cannot clear a desk.

Credit file

The pack typically includes a credit memo, contract and counterparty logic, security posture, and KYC/AML materials. The memo states the applicant, the commercial deal, sources and uses, and the ask in language a trade desk expects. Memo craft sits on lender-ready credit memo.

Draft LC terms and wording check

Draft terms are checked against the underlying contract in a UCP 600 context so the instrument and the commercial deal do not fight each other. This is packaging support, not legal advice. Clean wording reduces amendment loops after issuance.

Applicants who already hold a relationship bank should still expect the desk to re-underwrite a large new LC as a fresh credit decision. Packaging for a second bank, or for confirmation, uses the same file so answers stay consistent. That is how arrangement differs from simply asking the same relationship manager again with the same thin pack.

Where the beneficiary is in a higher-risk corridor, confirmation appetite becomes part of fit mapping. The confirming bank runs its own credit view of the issuer and the corridor. The applicant file still has to show the commercial deal clearly, or confirmation talks stall even when an issuer is willing.

Bank process with fit issuers

Financely runs a controlled process with fit issuing banks and, where the beneficiary needs it, confirmation. Distribution is lender-agnostic and built for fit, not for a preferred-introducer list. Credit decisions stay with the banks. For a broader competitive process across trade providers, see trade finance competitive lender process.

Single LC vs an import LC line

Use this page when you need one or a small number of LCs for a contract or purchase: importers, project contractors, EPC buyers and commodity buyers with occasional issuance needs. Recurring importers who need a revolving facility should use import LC line structuring instead. That page packages a facility for repeated draws, not a one-shot issuance.

This page

One-off or occasional LC issuance for applicants who need a bank to issue against a live contract or purchase order.

Import LC line

Revolving facility packaging for recurring import flows, often combined with broader working capital in one lender-ready file.

What it costs

Two layers apply. Bank LC charges are set by the issuing and confirming banks and vary by instrument, tenor and risk. Background on bank fee categories sits on letter of credit fees. Financely's fee is a fixed written amount after Go/No-Go and a signed scope. No fee amounts appear on this page.

Who this does not fit

Not for leased instruments or monetisation asks. Requests for "leased" LCs, MT799 pre-advice only, or instruments for monetisation fail Go/No-Go. Read what an MT799 can and cannot do.

Applicants without financials, without a real underlying contract, or seeking issuance with no security story of any kind usually receive a No-Go with a gap list rather than a packaging scope.
