Structured Trade Finance

Structured Trade Finance Arrangement for Traders and Producers

Structured trade finance funds a commodity flow against the flow itself: goods, receivables, offtake contracts and controlled collateral. Financely, a borrower-retained UK arranger, structures the facility, builds the lender-ready file and runs a competitive lender process to signed terms. Lenders decide and fund.

What makes trade finance "structured"

Structured deals are built to be self-liquidating. Title and cash move with the goods. Collateral is controlled through warehouses, tanks or assignment of proceeds. Risk mitigants such as insurance and hedging sit in the file so a desk can rely on the flow, not only the corporate balance sheet. That is the difference between a generic working-capital ask and structured trade and commodity finance.

Structures we arrange

Physical commodity traders in energy, metals and agri, producers needing pre-export funding, and processors needing inventory or tolling finance are the core audience. Recurring flows, identifiable offtakers and suppliers, and collateral that can be controlled are the readiness signals.

Borrowing base facilities

Advances against eligible inventory and receivables with ongoing certificates. Detail: borrowing base facility for commodity trading.

Pre-export finance

Funding against contracted production and offtake before shipment. Detail: pre-export finance for commodity producers.

Inventory and warehouse finance

Title and control through warehouses or tanks, with stock reporting desks can underwrite. Detail: commodity inventory financing for physical traders.

LC-backed and transactional structures

Trade settled under letters of credit with structured controls around documents and proceeds. Detail: structured letter of credit financing for commodity trading.

Offtake and prepayment structures for buyers and producers sit on structured offtake financing. The credit-file deliverable for traders is commodity trade finance credit file. Many mandates combine more than one structure in a single coherent pack.

How arrangement works

Arrangement starts with evidence, not outreach. Financely issues a written Go/No-Go on the flow, collateral and ask. If the case is bankable, the work maps supplier to offtaker (title and cash), builds a collateral and control plan, and packages a lender-ready file: credit memo, model, risk matrix, data room and KYC. Memo craft sits on lender-ready credit memo.

Lender-fit mapping then decides which banks and trade funds can credit the commodity, corridor and ticket. Controlled distribution, a single Q&A log and like-for-like term comparison follow. The end-to-end competitive process is also described on trade finance competitive lender process. Credit decisions and funding stay with lenders.

What lenders look at in a structured trade file

  • Counterparty quality (suppliers and offtakers), including concentration and payment history
  • Collateral control and title pathway from origin to sale
  • Margining and hedging where price risk matters
  • Track record of the trading or producing entity
  • Jurisdiction and sanctions screening on parties and corridors
  • Reporting cadence (stock, receivables, borrowing-base certificates)

Desks that cannot control collateral, or that cannot see how the flow repays itself, typically decline or demand security the trader cannot give. Packaging has to answer those points before outreach.

Corridor concentration, seasonal stock builds and offtaker payment terms all belong in the model and the risk matrix. Desks expect to see how a delay in shipment or a price move still leaves repayment intact. Hedging language in the file should match what the trader can actually execute, not what looks good in a pitch.

Operational detail matters as much as legal form. Who holds warehouse receipts, who can release stock, and how proceeds are trapped into a controlled account are questions that appear early in Q&A. Answering them inside the pack shortens diligence and keeps competing funds on the same fact set.

When structured trade finance does not fit

No track record and no controllable collateral, a single speculative cargo, or "proof of funds" style requests fail Go/No-Go. Structured trade needs evidence the flow can repay itself.

First-time traders are not automatically excluded. They need evidenced counterparties, a clear title and cash path, and collateral that can be controlled. The Go/No-Go states whether that bar is met.

Producers and processors should also bring logistics and offtake evidence early: shipping windows, storage locations, and who pays whom at each step. Without that map, a borrowing-base or pre-export sketch cannot be stress-tested, and competitive outreach starts on a weak footing. Arrangement work is largely the discipline of making that map lender-readable before any fund or bank sees it.

Fee frame

Financely is borrower-retained for a fixed written fee after Go/No-Go and a signed scope. Financely is not paid by lenders. Any success fee is written before you commit. No fee amounts or advance-rate numbers appear on this page. Borrower-retained fees keep distribution lender-agnostic.

Frequently asked questions

What is structured trade finance?

Lending secured on the commodity flow (goods, receivables, contracts) rather than corporate balance sheet alone.

What is the difference between structured trade finance and commodity trade finance?

Commodity trade finance is the broad category. Structured deals add collateral control, assignments and risk mitigants so lenders can rely on the flow.

Does Financely provide structured trade finance?

Financely arranges it. Banks and trade funds lend.

Who lends in structured trade?

Trade finance banks and non-bank trade funds. Fit depends on commodity, corridor and size.

What do I need to start?

Trading history, contracts, financials, collateral and logistics details, and KYC.

Do you work with first-time traders?

Only where the flow, counterparties and collateral can be evidenced. The written Go/No-Go says so.

Running a recurring commodity flow that needs structured funding?

Send your trading history, the flow (supplier, offtaker, corridor), collateral and financials. You get a written Go/No-Go before any fee.
