Structured Trade And Supply Chain Finance

Sustainable Sourcing Finance for Commodity Supply Chains

Buyers of cocoa, coffee, cotton, palm oil, timber, metals and other raw materials are under growing pressure to prove where their goods come from and how they were produced. Certified and traceable supply costs more to build: farmers and cooperatives need pre-finance, suppliers need to be paid on time, and traders need working capital that recognises the extra documentation. Financely structures and arranges sustainable sourcing finance, linking the funding of a supply chain to the traceability and sustainability data that buyers and lenders now ask for.

Financely is an advisory and arranging firm, not a lender. Facilities are provided by banks, trade finance funds, impact investors and other third parties, and remain subject to their credit approval.

Who This Service Is For

Brand owners and buyers

Food, apparel, consumer goods and industrial companies that want to secure certified or traceable supply and support their suppliers' working capital.

Traders and exporters

Companies that aggregate product from producers and need pre-finance and inventory funding for segregated or certified volumes.

Producers and cooperatives

Farms, cooperatives, processors and mines that sell under offtake contracts and need funding before harvest, production or shipment.

Companies facing traceability rules

Importers into markets with due diligence requirements on deforestation, forced labour or origin, such as the EU Deforestation Regulation, that need finance tied to compliant supply.

What We Arrange

  • Pre-export and pre-harvest finance: funding for producers and cooperatives, repaid from deliveries under an offtake contract. See pre-export finance for commodity producers.
  • Supplier finance programmes: buyer-led programmes that pay suppliers early against approved invoices, with terms that can reward verified sustainability performance. See supply chain finance programme buildout.
  • Sustainability-linked trade facilities: revolving or borrowing base facilities whose pricing is linked to agreed, measurable sustainability targets.
  • Inventory and receivables finance for certified goods: funding for segregated stock and the receivables it generates, with collateral controls that preserve the chain of custody.
  • Soft commodity structures: crop-specific structures for coffee and cocoa, from pre-production to shipment and receivables. See coffee and cocoa trade finance.

Eligibility

A sustainable sourcing facility is still a trade finance facility. Lenders first need a bankable trade: a creditworthy offtaker or buyer, a real contract, a producer that can deliver, and a way to control the goods and the cash. The sustainability element sits on top. It needs credible data, such as certification, traceability records or third-party verification, and targets that can be measured and reported. Financely assesses both sides at deal review and does not set a fixed minimum size.

How The Process Works

  1. Deal review. You submit the supply chain summary, contracts, financials and the sustainability data you hold. Financely screens the file and proposes a route.
  2. Engagement. A written estimate sets out scope, retainer and success fee. Work begins once it is signed and the retainer is paid.
  3. Structure. Financely maps the flow of goods, documents and cash, identifies the risk points and designs the facility, including any sustainability-linked terms and how they are verified.
  4. Credit file. A lender-ready pack covering the parties, contracts, collateral controls, traceability systems and reporting.
  5. Placement. The file goes to banks, trade finance funds and impact-oriented lenders whose mandate fits the commodity, geography and sustainability goals.
  6. Term sheets to drawdown. Financely compares terms, supports negotiation and documentation, and helps set up reporting so the facility runs smoothly after closing.

What Lenders Need To See

  • Offtake or supply contracts with named counterparties.
  • Financial statements of the borrower and, where relevant, the offtaker.
  • Production or sourcing history by volume and origin.
  • Certification, traceability or verification records.
  • Logistics, storage and collateral control arrangements.
  • Ownership structure and KYC on all key parties.

Why Financely

  • Trade finance first. The structure is built on a bankable trade, so the sustainability goals are financed rather than just reported.
  • Whole-chain view. Producers, traders and buyers are looked at together, so finance reaches the part of the chain that needs it.
  • Wider capital options. Financely also advises on green bond and ESG financing where a larger corporate programme fits better than a trade facility.
  • Written economics. Fees are agreed in a signed estimate before work begins. Third-party costs such as certification, verification and legal counsel are paid by the client directly.

No label without data. Lenders treat sustainability claims they cannot verify as a risk, not a selling point. Financely does not structure facilities around targets that cannot be measured and reported.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is sustainable sourcing finance?

It is trade and supply chain finance that funds the sourcing of raw materials produced and traced to agreed standards. It includes pre-finance for producers, supplier finance and trade facilities whose terms can be linked to sustainability performance.

Does sustainable sourcing finance cost less?

Not automatically. Some lenders offer pricing adjustments when agreed sustainability targets are met, but the base pricing still depends on the credit risk of the trade and the parties.

Can smallholder cooperatives get pre-finance?

Yes, where there is a creditworthy offtaker, a delivery track record and a way to control repayment from sales. Many structures route repayment through the offtaker or a collection account.

What sustainability data do lenders need?

Usually certification or verification records, traceability data linking volumes to origin, and a reporting process for any targets in the facility. The exact requirements depend on the lender and the commodity.

Is Financely a lender?

No. Financely is an advisory and arranging firm. Facilities are provided by third-party institutions and are subject to their credit approval.

How does Financely charge?

Financely charges a deal review fee, then a retainer and a success fee agreed in a signed estimate before work begins. Third-party costs are paid by the client directly.
