How to Open an LC to Import Solar Panels from China
A letter of credit for importing solar panels from China replaces the large upfront deposit many module suppliers request. Your bank commits to pay the manufacturer only when compliant shipping documents are presented, so neither side carries the other's performance risk.
Most Chinese module makers accept an irrevocable LC at sight from an acceptable bank, and some accept usance terms that give you time to sell or install before paying.
Documents to require in the LC
Tap each document to see why it protects you.
Select a document.
Sight or usance
Sight LC.
The supplier is paid when documents comply. It is simple and widely accepted, but you fund the cargo on arrival.
Usance LC.
Payment is deferred, often 90 to 180 days, while the supplier can discount the LC for early cash. See usance LC financing.
Confirmation.
If your bank is not acceptable to the manufacturer, a confirming bank adds its own undertaking. See LC confirmation services.
What Financely delivers
We structure the LC terms with your supplier, prepare the application and credit file for the issuing bank, and arrange confirmation or usance discounting where needed. Deliverables include LC drafting aligned with UCP 600, a document checklist, an issuing bank shortlist and full support through to MT700 issuance. See our documentary letter of credit service.
It suits EPCs, distributors and developers importing modules or inverters from Chinese manufacturers.
Import Your Modules on LC Terms
Send us the supplier proforma, the order value and your bank. We will scope the work and send a fixed quote.
Do Chinese solar manufacturers accept letters of credit?
Most established manufacturers accept irrevocable LCs from acceptable banks, often instead of a large T/T deposit.
What does an import LC cost?
Costs depend on the issuing bank, your credit standing, tenor and whether confirmation is required. We quote once we see the order and the banking relationship.
Can I get an LC without a credit line at my bank?
Banks may issue against cash collateral or a structured facility. We assess the options as part of the engagement.
