Bank Cut Your Trade Line? Commodity Finance Options for Mid-Size Traders

Commodity trade finance without a bank is available from trade finance funds, private credit lenders and specialist lenders, usually starting with secured, deal-by-deal facilities and moving to a borrowing base line once a track record is in place.

If your bank has cut or frozen your line, the question is not whether capital exists. It is which lender fits your stage, and how to present your flows so that lender can say yes.

Why banks pulled back

The 2020 losses changed the market. After the collapse of Hin Leong, which left 23 banks owed USD 3.5 billion, ABN AMRO quit commodity trade finance, BNP Paribas and Rabobank reviewed their businesses, Société Générale stepped back from Asia and Natixis cut energy exposure, as Bloomberg reported in August 2020. Consultant Jean-François Lambert said at the time that the retreat would affect "by and large all the tier 2 and tier 3 players". The banks that stayed favoured the largest houses, a pattern that resurfaced during the 2026 Hormuz disruption.

Who lends now

  • Trade finance funds that lend against specific cargoes, inventory and receivables, often alongside credit insurance.
  • Private credit managers with trade or asset-based strategies, suited to larger, recurring flows. See how private credit invests in trade finance.
  • Specialist and regional banks, including Swiss, Gulf and African lenders with appetite for particular commodities or corridors.
  • Larger traders and offtakers that prepay suppliers in return for the product.

Match the structure to your stage

  1. Transactional finance. Deal-by-deal funding secured on one cargo, with a confirmed buyer and controlled documents. The usual entry point after a bank exit. Lenders expect: Signed purchase and sale contracts, title documents, insurance, buyer acceptable to the lender, often a confirmed LC or credit insurance on the buyer.
  2. Borrowing base facility. A revolving line sized on eligible inventory and receivables, reset through regular borrowing base certificates. Lenders expect: Six to twelve months of clean transactions, monthly reporting, a collateral manager or title control, and audited accounts.
  3. Inventory and receivables programmes. Larger, longer facilities that finance stock in approved warehouses and insured receivables across many buyers. Lenders expect: Two or more years of audited accounts, a track record with the lender, hedging policy, and systems that report positions daily.

What lenders check

  • Title and control over the goods at every stage, through warehouse receipts, bills of lading or a collateral manager
  • Buyer and supplier quality, concentration and payment history
  • Margins per trade and how price risk is hedged
  • Accounts, ownership and KYC, including on intermediaries
  • The reporting you can produce every month, starting with a borrowing base report

Pricing compared with banks

Non-bank lenders generally cost more than a bank line. Funds have a higher cost of capital, and arrangement fees, collateral management and insurance add to the all-in price. What you buy is access and speed on structures a bank will not take. The gap narrows as your track record grows, which is why a first fund facility is often the route back to bank pricing. Our page on borrowing base facilities for physical commodity traders explains how lenders size the line.

Frequently asked questions

Can a commodity trader get trade finance without a bank?

Yes. Trade finance funds, private credit lenders and some larger traders finance commodity flows directly, usually on a secured, transaction-by-transaction basis before moving to a revolving borrowing base facility.

Who are non-bank trade finance lenders?

Trade finance and commodity funds, private credit managers with trade strategies, credit insurers working alongside lenders, and trading houses that prepay producers or suppliers in return for offtake.

Is non-bank trade finance more expensive?

Usually yes, because funds have a higher cost of capital than banks and price in arrangement and monitoring costs. The trade-off is access, speed and flexibility on structures banks will not consider.

What do borrowing base lenders require?

Controlled collateral, regular borrowing base certificates, acceptable buyers and suppliers, insurance, and accounts that support the volumes you trade.
