Why Blockchain Infrastructure Belongs in Financial Technology Due Diligence

A financial application can display a polished dashboard while relying on fragile connections behind the scenes. For products that handle blockchain payments or digital assets, those connections influence whether balances update correctly, transactions reach the network, and operations teams can reconcile activity. Evaluating the business therefore requires more than reviewing its interface or commercial model. The infrastructure linking the application to the blockchain deserves attention of its own.

Understand How the Application Accesses Blockchain Data

A blockchain node runs software that participates in a network and maintains or accesses information about its state. Applications communicate with nodes through interfaces that allow them to request data or submit transactions. RPC, short for remote procedure call, is one common mechanism for this communication.

Access to rpc nodes for developers allows engineering teams to connect applications to blockchain networks without necessarily operating every node themselves. A payment platform, for example, might use these connections to check balances, submit signed transactions, and retrieve transaction receipts.

That access has a specific role. An RPC connection does not independently establish a customer’s identity, determine whether an invoice is valid, or confirm that a commercial contract has been fulfilled. Those functions belong to other systems and processes. Understanding these boundaries helps financial decision-makers assess what the technology actually supports.

Separate Connectivity From Payment Completion

Receiving a successful response from an infrastructure service does not always mean a payment is complete. A node may accept a transaction for submission before the network includes it in a block. Inclusion and finality are also distinct concepts, with their meaning depending on the blockchain involved.

Consider a hypothetical business platform that releases a service after receiving payment. If its software treats submission as completion, it may act before the payment has reached the required confirmation state. The underlying connection could function correctly while the application’s business logic remains flawed.

Due diligence should therefore examine how the platform represents transaction status. Pending, included, failed, and sufficiently confirmed transactions need appropriate treatment. The operations team also needs a process for investigating cases that remain unresolved.

A similar distinction applies to data freshness. An endpoint can respond quickly while returning information from a node that has fallen behind. Response time alone therefore provides an incomplete picture of reliability.

Examine Resilience and Operating Costs Together

Running nodes internally involves infrastructure, software maintenance, monitoring, and specialist staff. Managed access transfers some operational work to a provider, while introducing dependencies on that provider’s service, capacity, and commercial terms. Neither arrangement removes the need for oversight.

The relevant question is whether the chosen setup supports the application’s workload. A balance display and a historical transaction analysis service may place very different demands on infrastructure. Request limits, access to historical state, and supported methods can all affect suitability.

Costs should be assessed against realistic activity. One customer action may trigger several background requests, while reporting jobs can create additional demand. Testing only a quiet demonstration environment may understate both capacity requirements and ongoing expenses.

Resilience also requires more than a second endpoint listed in a configuration file. Teams need to test whether backup connections support the necessary requests and return sufficiently current data. Recovery procedures should account for transactions already submitted, preventing uncertainty from turning into duplicate business actions.

Look for Evidence That Operations Can Be Reconciled

Financial controls depend on connecting technical events to business records. A transaction hash identifies blockchain activity, but it does not explain which invoice, customer instruction, or internal approval prompted that activity. The application must preserve those relationships.

Useful evidence includes request logs, transaction identifiers, status changes, and records of exceptions. Sensitive credentials and signing keys require separate protection; routine infrastructure logs should not expose them.

Reviewers can also ask how the team detects missing events and rebuilds records after an interruption. A dashboard returning to normal does not prove that every transaction during the outage has been accounted for.

Reliable blockchain access supports a financial product’s ability to operate consistently and explain its results. For lenders, investors, and commercial partners reviewing such a business, infrastructure deserves attention alongside revenue and growth. Clear transaction handling, tested recovery, and traceable records provide a stronger foundation for assessment than headline speed or availability claims alone.
