15 Non-Bank Personal Lenders Worth Comparing Before You Go to Your Bank

Non-bank lenders now compete directly with high street banks for unsecured personal credit in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. They usually decide faster and price each borrower individually. Many will also lend to people that a bank's scorecard turns down. The cost is wider rate bands, and some charge upfront fees that only show up when you compare total cost.

This guide ranks five non-bank providers in each market. We looked at how much each one lends directly to consumers, how clearly it publishes its pricing, its loan size range and which borrowers it suits. Rates and limits come from lender disclosures and major comparison sites as of mid-2026. They change often, so confirm them with the lender before you apply.

What counts as a non-bank lender

A non-bank lender makes consumer loans without a full banking licence. It does not fund those loans from customer deposits. The money comes from securitisation, warehouse facilities, institutional investors or a partner bank. The structure differs in each of the three markets, and that affects who your contract is actually with.

In the United States, many well-known fintech lenders work through bank partners. Upgrade is a good example. It is not a bank itself, and its loans are issued by FDIC-insured partners including Cross River, Blue Ridge and Celtic. Upgrade underwrites and services the loan, but the lender named on your agreement may be the partner bank. In the United Kingdom, non-bank lenders are authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority for consumer credit and lend from their own balance sheets or funding lines. In Australia, they hold an Australian Credit Licence from ASIC but are not authorised deposit-taking institutions supervised by APRA.

Advertised ranges are not offers. Every rate quoted below is a published range. The rate you actually get depends on your credit file, income, existing debts and, in some cases, whether you offer security. Most lenders listed here let you check your rate with a soft search that does not affect your credit score. Use that before submitting a full application.

Top 5 non-bank personal lenders in the US

The US market has the widest choice. Most of these lenders cap APRs at 35.99%, and the gap between their lowest and highest rates is large, so prequalifying with two or three of them is the most useful thing you can do.

1. Upstart

Upstart lends $1,000 to $75,000 at fixed APRs from 6.2% to 35.99%, over three or five years, with no prepayment penalty. Its underwriting model looks at education, employment and other data beyond the credit score. That makes it a strong option for borrowers with a thin credit file but solid earning prospects.

2. Upgrade

Upgrade offers $1,000 to $50,000 at APRs of 7.74% to 35.99%. It charges a one-time origination fee of 1.85% to 9.99%. On debt consolidation loans it can pay your existing creditors directly. It also accepts joint applications and offers a secured option, which helps fair-credit borrowers get approved.

3. Best Egg

Best Egg lends roughly $2,000 to $50,000 at APRs from 6.99% to 35.99%. Its most distinctive product is a loan secured on the permanent fixtures of a home you own. That gives homeowners a lower-rate route without a full second-charge mortgage. NerdWallet named it its 2026 best personal loan for good credit.

4. Prosper

Prosper runs a lending marketplace funded partly by investors. It quotes fixed APRs from 8.99% to 35.99% and origination fees from 1% to 9.99%. You need a credit score of 640 or above to accept a loan. It is better known for its consistent process and long track record than for the lowest rates.

5. OneMain Financial

OneMain Financial is one of the largest US consumer finance companies and runs a national branch network. It lends $1,500 to $30,000 at APRs of 11.99% to 35.99%. Larger amounts usually need a first lien on a vehicle no more than ten years old. It suits subprime borrowers who prefer to deal with a branch in person.

US lender Loan size Published APR range Best suited to
Upstart $1,000 to $75,000 6.2% to 35.99% Thin credit files, strong income
Upgrade $1,000 to $50,000 7.74% to 35.99% Fair credit, debt consolidation
Best Egg $2,000 to $50,000 6.99% to 35.99% Good credit, homeowners
Prosper Varies by state 8.99% to 35.99% Scores of 640 and above
OneMain Financial $1,500 to $30,000 11.99% to 35.99% Subprime, vehicle-secured borrowing

Top 5 non-bank personal lenders in the UK

UK lenders advertise a representative APR. FCA rules require at least 51% of accepted applicants to get that rate or better, so up to 49% may pay more. The price you are quoted after a soft search is the figure that matters.

1. Lendable

Lendable is a direct lender offering unsecured loans of up to £25,000 over one to five years, with a fully digital application. The Financial Times reported in 2026 that it issued more new personal loans in 2025 than any UK bank. It also lends under the Zable brand.

2. Novuna Personal Finance

Novuna Personal Finance, formerly Hitachi Personal Finance, is part of Mitsubishi HC Capital. It lends £1,000 to £35,000 over two to seven years and says it lends more than £2 billion a year. It is a good fit for prime borrowers who want a longer term and a large established lender behind the loan.

3. Admiral Money

Admiral Money has the widest range in this group. It offers unsecured loans of £1,000 to £40,000 over one to eight years, and Finder lists a 12.9% representative APR across that range. Borrowers can hold more than one Admiral loan at the same time.

4. 118 118 Money

118 118 Money lends £1,000 to £8,000 to people with imperfect credit histories. It is not a payday lender. Once a loan is approved, it says funds usually arrive within 15 minutes to two hours. Expect higher rates than prime lenders charge, in return for a better chance of approval.

5. Plend

Plend is an FCA-authorised direct lender. It positions itself on widening access to affordable credit for people whom traditional credit scoring tends to miss, such as newer UK residents and people with short credit histories. It is worth checking if mainstream lenders have declined you on credit history alone.

UK lender Loan size Term Best suited to
Lendable Up to £25,000 1 to 5 years Fast digital decisions, fair to good credit
Novuna Personal Finance £1,000 to £35,000 2 to 7 years Prime borrowers, longer terms
Admiral Money £1,000 to £40,000 1 to 8 years Larger unsecured amounts
118 118 Money £1,000 to £8,000 Fixed term Imperfect credit, smaller sums
Plend Varies Fixed term Thin or newer UK credit files

Top 5 non-bank personal lenders in Australia

Australian lenders must publish a comparison rate. It folds most fees into a single figure based on a standard benchmark loan, which makes it the fairest headline number to compare. Non-bank lenders have consistently held the lowest advertised personal loan rates in this market.

1. Harmoney

Harmoney lends $2,000 to $100,000 unsecured. In Money.com.au's July 2026 rate table it carried the lowest personal loan rate in the market, with a comparison rate from 5.76%. The fully online process and high loan limit suit prime borrowers consolidating larger balances.

2. Plenti

Plenti, formerly RateSetter Australia, is ASX-listed and lends $5,000 to $75,000 with comparison rates from about 6.17%. Its variable rate loan was highly commended for best unsecured personal loan in the 2026 Finder Awards. It also runs a green loan range for solar and batteries.

3. NOW Finance

NOW Finance offers both unsecured loans of $5,000 to $50,000 and secured loans of $15,000 to $100,000, with comparison rates from 5.95%. The secured option makes it one of the better choices for borrowers who can pledge a vehicle to get a larger amount.

4. Wisr

Wisr lends $5,000 to $62,000 unsecured, at fixed rates over three, five or seven years. It charges no early repayment penalty and no monthly fee on its personal loan. Factor the upfront establishment fee into your comparison, because on a five-year loan it moves the true cost noticeably.

5. Latitude Financial

Latitude Financial is one of the largest non-bank consumer lenders in Australia. It offers fixed and variable rate personal loans. Its variable product appeals to borrowers who expect to repay early or want the benefit if rates fall. Check the establishment fee, which some comparison partners waive under promotional offers.

Australian lender Loan size From (comparison rate) Best suited to
Harmoney $2,000 to $100,000 5.76% Prime borrowers, large unsecured sums
Plenti $5,000 to $75,000 6.17% Good credit, green purchases
NOW Finance $5,000 to $100,000 5.95% Secured and unsecured options
Wisr $5,000 to $62,000 Personalised Fixed rates, 7-year terms
Latitude Financial Varies Personalised Variable rate borrowers

How to compare offers properly

Compare total cost, not the headline rate. A loan with a low interest rate and a 9% origination fee can cost more than a slightly higher rate with no fee. In the US, compare APRs, which include origination fees. In Australia, use the comparison rate. In the UK, compare the total amount repayable shown on your personalised quote.

Prequalify with at least three lenders. Soft searches do not affect your credit score, and the spread between offers for the same borrower is often several percentage points. Run your quotes close together so you are comparing against the same credit file.

Decide whether security is worth it. OneMain, Best Egg, NOW Finance and Upgrade all offer secured routes that can lower your rate or raise your limit. The trade-off is real, because missing payments can put the asset at risk.

Match the term to the purpose. A seven or eight-year term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest. For debt consolidation, a shorter term with direct payment to your existing creditors usually saves the most.

Borrowing for a business rather than yourself?

Many founders use a personal loan to fund working capital, inventory or an acquisition deposit, and end up personally liable at consumer rates. Business credit is usually cheaper and better structured, and it keeps the debt off your own credit file.

Financely arranges trade finance, asset-based lending, acquisition finance and project debt for companies through a network of more than 12,700 lenders. If your borrowing is really a business need, tell us about the deal first.

Frequently asked questions

Are non-bank personal lenders safe to borrow from?

The established lenders in this guide are regulated. US lenders hold state lending licences, UK lenders are authorised by the FCA and Australian lenders hold an ASIC credit licence. As a borrower you are not exposed to the lender's deposit risk, because you owe them money rather than the other way round. Check the regulator's register before applying to any lender you do not recognise.

Are non-bank loans more expensive than bank loans?

Not necessarily. In Australia, non-bank lenders often advertise the lowest rates on the market. In the US and UK, their top rates are higher than banks charge because they approve a wider range of credit profiles. Prime borrowers often get rates that match or beat a bank's.

Will checking my rate affect my credit score?

Almost every lender listed here uses a soft search to show a personalised rate, and that is not visible to other lenders. A hard search is recorded only when you accept an offer and submit a full application.

Can I apply if I live outside the country?

Generally no. Each lender requires residency, a local bank account and a local credit history. Some Australian and UK lenders accept certain visa holders, but non-residents are usually ineligible for consumer loans in all three markets.
